What are Platelet Rich Plasma Injections/PRP?
Platelet-Rich-Plasma, or PRP is blood that is concentrated with platelets. These platelets contain significant amounts of growth factors that are important in activating and accelerating tissue repair and regeneration. Platelet-rich plasma injections have been used to promote tissue healing in bone, tendon, ligaments, injured muscles, skin by promoting development of new blood vessels and stimulating the healing process. For example, when you cut yourself or skin your knee or elbow, platelets are activated to signal your body to start the healing process and in no time new skin is forming and that injury is now healed. Essentially PRP is jump starting the healing cascade in areas of your body that may need it by stimulating growth factors for repair. For more information about PRP –> Click here.
What is the Vampire Facelift®?
The Vampire Facelift® is a non-surgical cosmetic procedure used to enhance volume in the face by injecting a combination of hyaluronic acid (like Restylane or JUVÉDERM) and platelet-rich fibrin matrix (PRFM), which is a thicker form of platelet-rich plasma (PRP). The goal is to attain healthy, youthful, and rejuvenated skin, without the downtime. PRP and its healing properties are used to harness your own body’s healing and regenerative properties. The Vampire Facelift® is an outpatient procedure, and results can be experienced on the same day, with continual benefit of skin regeneration lasting for months – even over a year – after the procedure.
The Vampire Facelift® has become popular with many celebrities and now is becoming more and more common among everyday people who wish to avoid surgery yet still obtain a youthful and healthy look.
How does the Vampire Facelift® work?
To understand how the Vampire Facelift® works, it is necessary to understand what it is combatting: the natural aging of the face. The face ages in two ways:
1. There is loss of volume from bone, muscle, fat, and skin, causing a hollowness and loss of volume under the eyes and cheeks. The skin no longer has a rosy look but rather appears gray and dull.
2. The loss of elasticity and support of the skin causes drooping upper eyelids, lower eyelids, cheeks, and jowls, as well as sagging neck skin.
The Vampire Facelift® combats both of these at once. A combination of hyaluronic acid (like Restylane or JUVÉDERM) is injected first to help improve the loss of volume, and then PRFM is injected to help promote growth factors in the skin, leading to cellular and tissue repair and then skin rejuvenation. The hyaluronic acid improves volume, while the PRFM addresses the loss of elasticity. The result is firmer, fuller, and more youthful-looking skin!
What is the difference between a Vampire Facelift® and Vampire Facial®?
The Vampire Facelift® is not the same treatment as the Vampire Facial®. Unlike the Vampire Facial®, the Vampire Facelift® uses fillers. Thus, it is most appropriate for those who have lost volume in their face and need to have the face subtly reshaped.
How is the Vampire Facelift® performed?
After numbing cream is applied to the face, the PRFM is placed, resulting in a near-painless application. PRFM contains your body’s own concentrated growth factors to rejuvenate the face in several ways:
1. Enhance the formation of new blood vessels (also called “neovascularization”) and increase the blood flow to the skin, resulting in healthier, better quality skin.
2. Enhance new cell formation for skin renewal.
3. Help produce new collagen, which is the major component of facial skin that decreases as we age.
4. Repair the skin by activating multi-potent stem cells by tricking the body into thinking there is an acute injury. This combination of growth factors and stem cells helps generate new fatty tissue, which results in the generation of new, younger-skin.
When will I start to notice a difference? What can I expect from the Vampire Facelift®?
Regenerative medicine does not produce instant results. Rather, during the course of a few weeks your body will start to make internal repairs, resulting in a more youthful appearance during that time. You may initially have some light swelling that subsides over a few days, but as the weeks pass, the growth factors work to increase production of collagen, elastic fibers, and hyaluronic acid in the dermis. Blood supply also improves during this time.
It can take about six weeks before we see the initial results, and we can repeat the process then if needed. The procedure can be repeated a few times, and often in the first year some patients prefer to perform 4-6 treatments to see maximum benefits. Once we see the maximum results, we can perform maintenance treatments every 6-12 months.
Who is a good candidate for the Vampire Facelift®?
The Vampire Facelift® is NOT for everyone. People with more advanced signs of aging may benefit more from surgical treatment and/or BOTOX applications.
People with less visible signs of aging may benefit from using less extensive non-surgical procedures like hyaluronic acid fillers and PRP alone.
How long will the effects last?
Most agree that the positive effects will last at least a year. The positive effects will likely last longer with better general skin care (e.g. no smoking, no tanning, good diet). Also, regular health maintenance helps prolong results. However, no procedure is a one-time event.
Think of it like getting your hair cut. We can figuratively turn back the clock, but we cannot stop the clock. If you like the results, periodic ongoing maintenance will be required to restore the youthful effects.
How soon after the Vampire Facelift® can I go back to work?
There is little downtime to this procedure, and it is has been called a “lunchtime lift” because recovery is typically minimal. You can expect some redness and minimal bruising. There are no driving or activity restrictions except to avoid excessive sun exposure. Some experience some mild swelling which is normal depending on the treatment you have.
What areas are treated by the Vampire Facelift®?
Lines at corners of the mouth (“bunny lines”)
Dynamic wrinkles on the nose (“bunny nose”)
Lines in corners of the eyes (“crow’s feet”)
Plumping of the cheeks
